Bring sustainable, clean, and uninterrupted power, to schools in need

About

The need for this project was realized upon seeing the number of schools that face recurring power cuts during the summer months. Not only were students being taught in over 40º weather, but often the school themselves were shut due to the heat. Without being able to run a single fan or water-pump, these students lacked a proper learning environment. In order to support education, Power to Schools installs rooftop solar panels for government schools so that they can continue sessions even without reliable power.

After a crowdfunded pilot project in the Silokhra Government School, Power to Schools has adopted a CSR budget sponsorship strategy. Through CSR funds from willing corporations, more such projects will be installed around Delhi-NCR, and potentially even in remote areas going forward.

The project has received recognition and support from the Indian Government Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

By installing solar panels, we can

Reduce heat related school-closure in government schools

Impact

Schools with solar installations no longer have to close during summer power-outages, and students do not need to endure hot classroom settings for those that do not close. The ability to run water pumps also ensures functioning toilets and running water for the schools. Especially during the pandemic, this would allow kids to sanitize more effectively.

Sustainability

To ensure sustainability of the systems, the parts are bought with adequate warranties in a range from 2-5 years. The schools ensure the panels are regularly cleaned, and are given contact numbers for any potential issues. Electricians are shown the installation such that any future electrical problem will not affect the solar panel or grid connection.

The installation will cover a 3-panel system, approximating to about 1KW of power. The system would be installed in a hybrid setup, connected to an inverter-battery system.

The electricity will default to coming from the panels, will change to the batteries if the panels cannot supply enough, and will eventually change to the grid if the batteries are below a set threshold

Schools receiving installations are all found and certified by the NGO Pratham. Through their resources, all project locations have point-of-contacts, as well as a real need. This is to ensure the project is not going to a school that does not need the project as much as another may.
